Bullyproofing

PROGRAM GOAL: To ensure a school environment that is physically and psychologically safe for ALL students

A BULLYPROOFING CURRICULUM IS IMPORTANT: Studies have shown that in the average elementary school classroom, 2-3 students spend their day afraid. The US Department of Justice and the National Association of School Psychologists estimate that 160,000 children miss school each day because of fear.

BULLYPROOFING WILL BENEFIT ALL STUDENTS: In Linwood schools, we acknowledge that bullies exist. We are committed to providing risk-free schools for all students. We believe that through the implementation of this program, we will be more equipped to provide a safe school environment.

STUDENT AWARENESS IS A DETERRENT TO BULLIES: A specific curriculum addresses important bully/victim issues. Students come to recognize and understand bully behavior. They learn the HA HA SO method (Help, Avoid, Humor, Assert Yourself, Self Talk, and Own It) to combat bullies. They also learn bystander strategies through CARE (Creative Problem Solving, Adult Help, Relate and Join, and Empathy)VICTIMS NEED SUPPORT: Victims are identified through parent, teacher, peer, or self referral. In addition to assistance in coping with the bully, victims receive guidance in initiating and maintaining healthy relationships.

BULLIES NEED INTERVENTION: Bullies need to recognize and manage their anger. An awareness of behavior and how it affects others is essential. Bullies must deal with the natural and imposed consequences of their actions. A step towards improvement can be accomplished through SOLVE (Self-Talk, Observe, Lots of Alternatives, View the Consequences, and Evaluate).
